“An apple a day will give you a doctor away” This is a famous proverbial expressions from the 19th century, which seems to be true!
The benefits of apples for the health of human body are incredible: they improve memory, reduce the risk of heart attacks, and may even increase longevity.
The nutritional facts of apple appear to be slightly weak on first glance: no fat, no protein, small amounts of carbohydrates – limited elements. However, apples contain high levels of vitamins, especially vitamin C. But what is the secret?
The benefits of apples
The main benefits of apple are due to the presence of phytochemicals: they are organic compounds in plants that have biological effects but it seems to have lack nutritional value. The phytochemicals have not been investigated in detail yet, but they are used for their overall anti-inflammatory and metabolic properties.
First Benefit: Longer Life
According to a study which is published by the American Society of Chemistry in 2011, researchers were able to see lifelong growth effects in experimental animals, which was about 10%. There is also evidence that this chemical is responsible for maintaining motor abilities in laboratory animals.
Although research is currently being conducted on animal, there is no controversy by regarding the generalization of general findings on humans, like all clinical studies.
Second Benefit: Improving Memory
According to a study from the University of Massachusetts, apple consumption increases the amount of a neurotransmitter which is called acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine is a hormone with multiple tasks, one of which is neuroplasticity modulation, which means the ability of the brain to change and construct new structures.
The higher levels of acetylcholine in the brain lead to memory improvement, and in fact, the treatment selected for Alzheimer’s disease is to give the patient a drug aimed at increasing the amount of acetylcholine in the brain to help slow down the mental decline of the patients.
The UML group concluded: “The findings of the current study show that consuming antioxidant- which is rich in food such as apple and apple juice can help to reduce loss memory problems. .”
Third Benefit: Reducing the risk of heart attacks and stroke
Heart attack , stroke, and arteriosclerosis all share a few things: 1) They are really bad; 2) They are often created due to LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol).
Guess what? Apples could reduce LDL cholesterol up to 23%.
This is a remarkable decrease: in treating patients with high cholesterol, a 23% reduction by medicine usage is highly desirable. Standard drugs lower LDL cholesterol levels by 18 to 50 percent, but also have a lot of side effects, in other hands apple does not cause any side effects.
Fourth Benefit: Reducing the risk of cancer
According to a study in Hawaii, there is a relationship between apple consumption and the risk of lung cancer in both genders: the higher the consumption of apple, the lower the risk of cancer . In fact, in this study, the group with the highest apple intake could have an incredible risk to reduce of 40 to 50 percent.
This may be due to the high antioxidant properties in apples, which can disable certain enzymes (chemical compounds that activate certain processes in the body) that are responsible for lung cancer.
Another study by the Harvard Medical School found that only a 21% reduce lung cancer that was found in the study group.
Do other fruits also have such effects? Are the effects mentioned above only due to apple consumption? Are there other fruits with the same health benefits?
Yes, there are. A graph from the Cornell University shows the antioxidant properties in various fruits that are primarily responsible for the effects mentioned above.
Improving memory, reducing the risk of various diseases and increasing longevity – is not bad for a typical fruit.
